Vietnam war B52 images

The Vietnam War-America’s longest war-was fought on two fronts, by American GIs in Vietnam and by the antiwar protesters at home. It pitted the wealthiest and most technologically advanced nation on earth, the United States, against a poor but determined peasant army. In the end, America lost. But both countries paid an enormous price, economically and, more importantly, in human lives. It was an undeclared war, fought mostly by poor and working class Americans, many of them minorities. It cost the United States $220 billion and 58,000 lives. The Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians suffered even more devastating losses in human life-in the millions. And it was a “media” war: Americans routinely viewed uncensored combat footage on TV. This course presents the story of that war-from the perspective of world leaders, soldiers on all sides of the conflict, ordinary people, antiwar protesters and others-to try to answer the question: Why Vietnam?
